Lucky 13 for Friends of Handforth Station

Awards given out to local stations - including Handforth

Friends of Handforth station scooped the Cheshire East Council Award at the 14th annual Cheshire Best Kept Stations Awards Evening - held on Tuesday 10th January 2017.

The award ceremony was attended by the Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire, the High Sheriff of Cheshire, the Deputy Lord Mayor of Chester, as well as the mayors of Cheshire East, Halton, Tameside, Stockport along with six other local mayors.

The awards were presented before an audience of 140 guests at The Grange Theatre in Hartford, near Northwich, by Prof Paul Salveson MBE, the group advisor for society and communities at Arriva UK Trains and a 'founding father' of the community rail movement.

The judges noted the impressive overall experience whilst visiting Handforth Station, with the booking office having local artefacts, artwork and showing evidence of much local input.

They commented: “The range of station signs from railways around the world is a novel and very interesting idea and the gardens have many interesting features”

Mike Bishop, founder of the Handforth group, said: “This, our 13th award in the competition is testament to not only the commitment of volunteers, but even more so to the long term involvement of so many local people, groups and schools, especially those who have joined us in 11 different projects plus our regular work parties this year.

“This award is for all those who have have undoubtedly helped attract more people to use Handforth’s train services, putting the station at the heart of the community and the wider village firmly on the map.”

Last year, 2016, was the 20th anniversary of the group being founded and they have a number of projects already completed and others planned.

  • Goods traffic display
  • Deano, a ceramic fox arrives at station
  • Original watercolour painting of station presented to FoHS
  • National recognition of original heritage British Railways running in board and of Regional Railways totem
  • “Access for All” campaign through adjacent development
  • “Coffee to go” initiative with adjacent pub
  • Replica LNWR running in boards
  • “Urban Traveller Dictionary” poster “Mobile Phoney” from Irish Rail
  • Celebration party for our sponsors, supporters and Friends since 19“Urban 
  • “Urban Traveller Dictionary”  poster “Snoofing” from Irish Rail

 

Projects in the pipeline:

  • Artistic Welcome Arch sculptures 
  • International “Twinning” with a station group at Malahide, an Irish Rail station
  • New Art Loan exhibition by Wilmslow High School
