General Election 2017 - timetable

What will happen, and when

So, we’re going to the polls again for the second time - barely two years since we last decided who the country wanted as its elected officials.

So what will happen, and when? We decided to ring you this handy reference guide. Bookmark this page and carry it on your person always, if you’re so inclined!

Here is how #GE17 is taking shape… 

 

Tuesday 18th April

Prime Minister Theresa May signals her intention to hold an election on 8th June during a surprise announcement which took place shortly after 11am at 10 Downing Street. Most Cheshire MPs confirm they intend to stand again.

 

Wednesday 19th April

MPs backed the Prime Minister’s plan by voting (522 to 13) in the House of Commons to approve the motion. George Osborne took a final opportunity to make the headlines as an MP, as he stood down as representative for Tatton.

 

Saturday 22nd April

Purdah begins  - a period preventing central and local government departments from making announcements about any new or controversial government initiatives. The reason is because any such announcements could be seen as favouring one candidate or party over another.

 

Wednesday 3rd May

Parliament will be dissolved in order for MPs to focus on canvassing in their constituencies.

 

Monday 8th May

Notice of Election

 

Thursday 11th May, 4pm

Last day for candidate nominations and notification of election agents. Also the deadline for candidate withdrawal. It’s the last day for objections to nomination papers as well as (between 10am - 12noon or exceptionally between 12noon - 5pm). The Statement of Persons Nominated, including Notice of Poll and list of Polling Stations will be issued at 5pm.

 

Monday 22nd May

The deadline for registering to vote in the election - for those who haven’t voted in elections before.

 

Tuesday 23rd May, 5pm

Last day for applications for postal votes, or to change existing postal vote details

 

Wednesday 24th May

Postal ballot papers issued

 

Wednesday 31st May, 5pm

Last day for applications to vote by proxy

 

Thursday 1st June

Last issue of postal ballot papers. It’s also the last day for notification of appointment of polling and counting agents.

 

Friday 2nd June

First day for requests to replace lost postal ballot papers

 

Thursday 8th June, 7am - 10pm

Polls open - time to get voting!

 

Thursday 8th June, 5pm

Last opportunity for replacement of spoilt or lost postal ballot papers

 

Thursday 8th June, after 10pm

Votes counted at leisure centre sports halls across the county

 

Friday 9th June (expected to be in the early hours)

Results announced
