Council offers volunteering qualification

Shares

People who give up their free time to volunteer are to be recognised with a new qualification.

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s four Work Zones are offering a Level 2 Award in Volunteering, a free qualification for anyone claiming an out of work benefit over the age of 19.

The qualification is designed for individuals considering undertaking, or currently engaged in, a volunteering role.

It is designed to enable individuals to:

  • consider what they can offer as a volunteer
  • understand the rights and responsibilities of a volunteer
  • undertake a volunteering role

It is available across all four council-run Work Zones and will be delivered over five sessions:two in the classroom, two as 1:1 sessions, and one observation.

Customer must ensure they are in a work experience placement for the duration of the course, although those who don’t currently have a volunteering placement will be given help to find one.

Cheshire West and Chester Council supports volunteering and the work done by the hundreds of volunteers throughout the borough.

Among those volunteering in Cheshire West is Jim Struthers (pictured above) from Kelsall.

Jim said: “I think volunteering is infectious, because there is a real feel good factor. People appreciate what you do and you want to keep on doing it.

“You will choose other jobs and will also do some other volunteering roles.”

He added: “I volunteer because I know that I am doing something that is worthwhile.

“Most people are appreciative, they know you have helped them and you are doing it of your own free will and in your own time.

“Apparently there is some sort of medical evidence that because volunteers have a feel good factor they actually live longer.

“Volunteering is good for people and maybe they live longer because they have got a good outlook on life.”

Cllr Brian Clarke, CWAC cabinet member for economic development and infrastructure, said: “This qualification provides formal recognition of volunteering activity.

“Through participation in volunteering activities, candidates will develop a range of skills and personal development experiences which will help to prepare them for responsibility, further education and employment.”
