The cheques were handed to the local groups ahead of the annual town meeting at the end of April. Cllr Brown was the mayor in the 2016-2017 mayoral year.

The bulk of the funds raised were given to his main charity, East Cheshire Hospice, which received £4602.84.

Congleton Gang show received £500.

Congleton Army Cadets 230 (Congleton) Squadron ATC, Congleton Youth Orchestra, Congleton Lions Youth Brass Band, Centre Stage Youth Theatre, Congleton Fire Station Cadets, St John’s Cadets and SOL Theatre School each received £250.

Cllr Brown said: “I would like to thank everyone involved for their support and financial contributions throughout the year and what a year it was, first time “Tour of Britain” and first time triathlon… fantastic!”

The money donated to the charity groups and organisations was raised through the annual Mayor’s Ball held in March, and also via the inaugural Congleton Mayor’s Triathlon held on Sunday 23rd April 2017.

Supporting these were numerous other charity events and donations which were made the town mayor’s charities throughout the year.

The mayoralty of Congleton is celebrating its 700th anniversary this year.
