Singularity - Bentley spec commercial

Media students given shoot experience with David Ellison

It’s not every day you get to play around with a Bentley, but a group of students from South Cheshire College were given the chance to do precisely that during a recent work experience project.

The finished project (see above) was put together by David Ellison Films as a spec portfolio car advert using a Bentley Continental GT Black Edition loaned to them by Bentley Motors Ltd.

The firm’s Vimeo page explained: “The concept was based around the notion of the singularity, an infinite point of infinite complexity, the car mirrored to give a kaleidoscopic effect to give the impression it was emerging from a singularity.”

The prestige vehicle was placed on a rotating turntable in a blacked-out environment and surrounded by a variety of pieces of specialist lighting equipment.

Students, Amelia Sanlon from Northwich and Felicity Davies from Nantwich, got the chance to work on the advertising shoot and learn from the company’s professional videographers.

Director of the shoot and owner of the company, David Ellison commented: “Working with South Cheshire College was an absolute joy, they provided enthusiastic and talented student filmmakers who came and worked very hard on our shoot.

“This also opened up the door for us to get Bentley’s help and give them an opportunity to not only work with their apprenticeship path in the college, but also assist the media department which they jumped at the chance to get involved with.”

He added: “Bentley has shown how much they support South Cheshire College and their students by giving this shoot a car and as much help as we could get.

“We hope very much to work again with the College on future projects using their students and continue our working relationship.”

The BTEC Extended Diploma in Media students worked as runners and assistant camera operators for the piece.

They were given the chance to use top end industry standard equipment, work in a variety of roles on set, and received expert advice from the crew members about future careers in the media.

Amelia commented: “I received a wonderful experience which I wouldn’t have been able to find myself.

“It was amazing to be able to use top end equipment and more important being shown specific techniques. What an experience it was!"

Felicity said: "It was a unique opportunity to work on a professional film set and I am grateful for the experience and advice that the crew have given me. It was an experience that will be useful for my future career in film.”

The spec advert was shot in Red Epic Dragon at 6K on Canon Cine primes. It required a full day to prelight, along with a full day filming - getting the car onto the turntable took more than three hours in itself, in order not to catch the vehicle’s exhaust system in the turntable’s mechanisms!
