Richard’s ready for take-off after rebrand and ABTA appointment

Local travel agent Richard Slater has taken his business to the next level, after being successfully approved and appointed his own ABTA membership, following continued growth.

Richard said: “The ABTA application process is very stringent, you are measured on experience, a sound current business, a structured plan for the business growth going forward, and most importantly, the financial fitness of the business, to ensure total protection for clients.”

As part of this expansion Richard has re-branded the business ‘Henbury Travel’ and developed a new website as well as coming up with a brand-new logo, which he says was based on the quite simple idea of a post mark he’d seen on the back of a postcard.

Richard started his own business as a home-based travel agent in 2011, following redundancy, and he is now into his 31st year as a travel agent.

He said: “What sets me apart from many agents is that this is the career path I have always followed, I have only ever been a travel agent, so my experience, I guess, is second to none!”

Richard continued: “For me, the reason we have been so successful is that clients like an independent family-run business and we can offer a wider range of holidays that you might not find in a high street chain.

“At the last count we approved around 300 different holiday companies”

Asked about the online competition, Richard said: “Many people do instinctively believe that they will get a better deal online, but actually when they think about the time spent trawling the web, filling out all the paperwork, booking with a travel agent does make sense, agents often have exclusive deals, can quickly recommend great hotel, and take the time to compare the right holiday for you, so you have a great holiday every time – and you receive financial protection with our CAA ATOL protection, so your money is safe too.”

He said: “Clients are always keen to know when to book and this varies with us making bookings for travel the next day, to booking taken already for 2020/1, but the average lead time is around 151 days before departure.

“We are currently on the hunt for retail premises, we need this to be the right location, this might not be in the town centre, as we are conscious that clients don’t relax and feel rushed if they are concerned about parking, or have people stood behind them waiting in a shop.

“We will probably end up close by with our own parking, and perhaps share with another business, we would love to hear from any business that would like to share space too.”

On the success of his business so far, Richard wants to thank all his clients who have booked with him and recommended him over the last seven years.
