Macclesfield Christmas Lights Switch On and Tree Of Light
Macclesfield’s Market Place will again be the focus for this year’s Christmas Lights Switch On event, taking place on Saturday 25th November.
With market stalls, children’s fair rides and live entertainment, the festivities begin at midday, with the Macclesfield Youth Brass Band playing traditional carols around the Christmas Tree, followed by a host of on stage entertainment.
The event will see free face painting and balloon modelling, plus street entertainment and a large craft fair inside the Town Hall. Father Christmas will be in his Grotto in St Michael’s Church and the town centre will be open for business.
Father Christmas will also be making his traditional appearance at around 4.30 pm when he heads into town to switch on the lights at around 5.30pm.
As well as the excitement of the Christmas Light Switch On, there will be a Tree Of Light ceremony in the town centre taking place on Thursday 7th December.
People are invited to gather together around the Market Place Christmas Tree in memory of loved ones, to sing carols and reflect on their memories together at what can sometimes be a challenging time of year.
Helena Gowler, community engagement officer for Macclesfield Town Council, explained: “We have decided to move the event from the Crematorium to the Market Place.
“The Christmas Tree in town is a focal point for the festivities so holding carols around the tree in memory of loved ones will give it an extra special meaning this year.”
In the lead up to the event, people have been invited to write a message on a star which will be hung on the tree before the get together.
People are encouraged to come along to the event on the 7th December to see all of the memory stars on the tree, and to join in with the carols led by All Hallows Catholic College.
St Michaels Church will be open for an hour after the event for anyone seeking some quiet time to reflect in memory of someone special.
