Winsford Salt Fair comes to town

Shares

Winsford Town Council is delighted to announce the return of its highly anticipated annual event, the Winsford Salt Fair, which will take place in the town centre (12-16th September 2018).

The event celebrates the town’s rich salt heritage and brings to life the town’s historic charter, providing royal assent for an annual fair!

Proceedings begin with the reading of the charter by town mayor Cllr Gina Lewis at 4:30pm on Wednesday 12th September, and end with a fun fair, markets and Troupe Dancing Competition on Sunday 16th September 2018.

Other attractions during the Salt Fair include the civic opening and crowning of the salt queen with the Mayor, a visit from Dr Diablo’s sideshow and a local produce market featuring food, crafts and more.

In addition, the ever-popular Mikron Theatre will be returning to Winsford, with their performance this year based on the 70th anniversary of the NHS, entitled ‘Get Well Soon’.

With so much entertainment available for all the family, the council is encouraging as many people as possible to come to Winsford and to make it a memorable celebration for the town.

Winsford’s salt industry began in the mid-1840s when local prospectors were searching for coal.

At that time this was important, as the existing salt mines in Northwich had started to collapse and another source of salt near the River Weaver was needed.

By 1897 what is now known as Winsford had become the largest producer of salt in the United Kingdom.

Mayor Cllr Gina Lewis commented: “It’s a great privilege to be celebrating this fantastic festival again. We have a busy programme of events lined up for everyone as you can see from our programme.

“The venue for much of the fair will be the Winsford Cross Shopping Centre, and we very much hope that this will encourage greater participation in the event.”

Cllr Lewis added: “This is a great opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy a variety of activities, so I hope you will join me at the Charter Reading on Wednesday 12th September where people can learn all about the origins of the fair.”
