As part of the ongoing regeneration of Chestergate in Macclesfield, Richard Slater has opened up Macclesfield’s only independent travel agent, Henbury Travel.

Richard – whose career as a travel agent dates back to 1987 – has most recently been a personal travel agent, working from a home office.

Richard is therefore one of the longest-serving travel agents in the area, and he has only ever worked for independent agents.

Whilst Richard’s business is independent, it makes him no less competitive for his customers.

The business is part of the Midcounties Co-operative Consortium, a £1 billion buying group which allows Henbury Travel to offer its clients great value prices – and match online prices with the larger operators like JET2, TUI & Thomas Cook.

Being part of a consortium also allows Richard to be Macclesfield’s exclusive retailer for Co-operative Holidays, the Co-op’s own brand packages for city breaks and sunshine holidays featuring low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet, all ATOL protected.

Richard has an extensive knowledge, built up over more than 30 years in the industry, and prides himself on the range of brochures now available in his new high street shop.

“We only display around 50 brochures, but have move than 200 in our store,” explains Richard.

“It’s probably the widest selection around – including Riviera Travel, Wendy Wu Tours, P & O Cruises, Olympic Holidays, Classic Collection, Saga, Great, Shearings, Hoseasons to name but a few!

“We’re also appointed agents for area specific destinations, such as African Pride, first class for Canada and New Zealand, and Great Rail for amazing holidays by rail, or Kuoni for weddings and honeymoons.

“In addition to our mainstream products, we are also appointed agents for luxury brands including Carrier, Abercrombie and Kent.”

Richard works closely with fellow industry specialists.

For instance, for India, he uses Nikhil, who you may have seen recently on the ITV series Millionaire’s Holiday Club.

Speaking about the decision to open up on the high street, Richard said: “We’ve been looking for a shop for a couple of years, and just couldn’t find the right one, so when we saw 127 Chestergate (with parking behind, and accessible for those walking in to town too) we grabbed it!

He added: “Many of our clients are inspired by offers they see in the papers, and we would recommend they give us a call if they see a holiday they like because we are agents for all reader offers and we probably have similar alternatives available – offering you a choice before you commit.”

Richard said he feels very proud to be an independent travel agent.

Whilst many travel agents claim to be independent, there’s nothing like being able to speak to, and have the experience of, the boss – and it’s unlikely you’ll get that from a firm with hundreds of branches.

Henbury Travel has had to go through rigorous financial and industry checks before being granted its ABTA membership, and to be able to offer their clients full CAA ATOL protection.

Henbury Travel has a range of opening offers for clients old and new, so pop in and see what they can offer you for your next holiday.
