Residents, businesses and visitors in Ellesmere Port can now benefit from free parking at the Wellington Road North car park.
Cheshire West and Chester Council is introducing a free parking offer from the beginning of this month, as part of the implementation of its borough-wide parking strategy.
The trial builds on one of the strategy’s key aims: to attract long stay parking away from the centrally located car parks, freeing up those spaces for short stay use.
Parking will be available free of charge all day until the car park closes at 7pm, every day of the week, for a trial period which runs up until the end of December 2019.
It’s hoped that providing free parking – particularly during weekends – will increase the use of the car park by people requiring longer stays in the town.
This in turn will relieve pressure on the car parks closest to shops and other amenities in the town centre and should help to increase turnover.
CWAC cabinet member for environment, highways and strategic transport, Cllr Karen Shore said: “This is great news for residents, businesses and visitors.
“To be able to park for free for a full day, especially at the weekend, will create new opportunities for everyone.”
Cllr Shore added: “Also, many council staff have moved into our Ellesmere Port offices in recent months and this free car park will encourage them to park further away, freeing up town centre parking spaces for residents.
“I hope this trial is successful and we can consider implementing free parking at this car park on a permanent basis when we carry out a review towards the end of the year.”
