Former Crewe and Nantwich Labour MP Laura Smith has been elected as the Cheshire East Council ward councillor for Crewe South.
Cllr Smith said: “Huge thanks to everyone in Crewe South who voted for me!
“It is an honour to represent you and I promise I won’t let you down. Thank you also to everyone who supported our campaign and came and helped.
“Most of all thank you to the amazing Cllr Dorothy Flude who was such an amazing mentor and friend to me.”
Cllr Flude passed away in December last year. She was Crewe South ward councillor since the council’s inception in April 2009.
Amongst many other roles, Cllr Flude was formerly a mayor of Cheshire East and also served as cabinet member for children and families.
Posting on Twitter, leader of Cheshire East Council Cllr Sam Corcoran said of the result: “Great to welcome Laura Smith as a Cheshire East councillor.”
Cllr Smith added that she is: “looking forward to a fresh start with the team on Cheshire East [Council]” following her general election defeat on 12th December.

Cheshire East Labour issued a statement on Sunday evening, with a comment from Cllr Sam Corcoran, leader of Cheshire East Council, and from the Crewe South winning candidate Cllr Laura Smith.
Cllr Corcoran said: “Dorothy Flude was an exceptional councillor and she will be missed. I welcome Laura Smith onto Cheshire East Council as the new Labour Councillor for Crewe South.
“I look forward to working with her to get the Crewe town centre regeneration done and to tackle fly tipping. I also congratulate Cllr Julian Proffit and Cllr Emma Angier on their election to Crewe Town Council.”
Cllr Smith said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won the seat in Crewe South and it will be my privilege to represent those residents on Cheshire East Council.
“Thank you to everyone who took the time to go and vote for me, and all those who came and supported my campaign.
“I really am so grateful. Also thank you once again to Cllr Dorothy Flude who was such a wonderful friend and mentor to me and did so much for Crewe.”

Across Cheshire East, there were also elections for two Crewe Town Council wards (West and St Barnabas), one Bollington Town Council wards (Central) and five neighbourhood plan referendums (Alsager; Acton, Edleston and Henhull; Church Minshull; Newhall; and Wybunbury combined parishes).
